RITMA Kinesiology Association

Kinesiology is the science that studies human movement. It focuses primarily on improvement, prevention, and health treatment through physical activity.
A kinesiologist is a professional who uses movement and physical activity strategically to prevent health problems, enhance performance, or support rehabilitation. Their practice is based on the scientific assessment of movement and the development of programs tailored to each individual.

Your kinesiologist can:

  • Assess physical condition and movement dynamics, including the analysis of strengths, weaknesses, lifestyle habits, and specific risks.
  • Design personalized physical activity programs for prevention, fitness, rehabilitation, or performance optimization.
  • Provide regular follow-ups and adjustments on progress, prepare evaluation reports, and collaborate with other health professionals if necessary.
  • Promote the benefits of physical activity and healthy lifestyle habits to clients and the general public.
  • Support a wide range of clients, from athletes to older adults, children, pregnant women, or clients living with specific medical conditions.
  • Take part in research, teaching, or awareness-raising activities related to physical health or prevention.

All members hold a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from a Quebec university.

Regulation on VO2 MAX Testing

Since July 3, 2025, kinesiologists have been officially authorized in Quebec to conduct maximal exercise tests, including VO2 max, for the assessment or rehabilitation of cardiac, respiratory, or vascular functions within a healthcare facility.

Conditions of Authorization

  • The kinesiologist must hold a university degree in kinesiology and a certification in clinical exercise physiology (Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology or American College of Sports Medicine).
  • The activity must be performed under an individual prescription, depending on the patient’s risk level:
    • Direct supervision: patient at high risk of complications.
    • Indirect supervision: patient at moderate risk.
    • General monitoring: patient at low risk.
  • The test must be carried out in a legally recognized healthcare facility.

Objectives and Scope

  • The authorization aims to reduce wait times for exercise testing, optimize patient care, and strengthen interprofessional teams.
  • It represents a step forward for the healthcare system by recognizing the expertise of kinesiologists in caring for patients with specific cardiorespiratory needs.
  • This regulation is part of a broader approach to increase recognition of the profession, with a long-term perspective of creating a dedicated professional order.

The practice of kinesiologists is now regulated, and their role is authorized for health assessments of major importance, under precise rules and with medical supervision.
